One of the attractions of quiet family-oriented Surfside is the wide, secluded beach bordered by a path through the dunes. Founded on 1935, Surfside was incorporated through the signatures of only 35 people, members of the Surf Club, a private club in Town. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,909. What makes Surfside most impressive is its strong and consistent commitment to the quality of life of its residents. Old and new houses are mixed together in a quiet, peaceful and relaxed neighborhood setting. To preserve this atmosphere, the condominiums and hotels along the oceanfront are not permitted to exceed 12 stories in height.
