Islamorada, “Village of Islands” is a village in Monroe County, Florida, on the islands of Lower Matecumbe Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Windley Key and Plantation Key in the Florida Keys. Incorporated in 1997, Islamorada has a population of some 7,000 residents. It’s colorful name which means “purple isles,” was chosen by Spanish explorers who saw the purple hue of its coastline from the lavender shells of sea snails.
Islamorada is the self-proclaimed “Sports Fishing Capital of the World.” For nearly 100 years, expert anglers have recognized the clear, warm waters as home to a large variety of game fish, as well as lobster, shrimp and crab. South of Lower Matecumbe Key, Long Key State Park has one of the loveliest beaches in the Keys, while the shops and galleries at Treasure Village and the Rain Barrel on Plantation Key offer a colorful collection of arts, crafts, and other creative island treasures.
